Return of the Blog

This is my first posting for DSWD2 - Web Design Intermediate. I'll continue to add to this throughout the semester when I find appropriate material. This will be my online diary for this semester and I'll add to this page as often as the spirit moves me. I'm generally not a big fan of blogging though, so this will be mainly concerned with my TAFE work.

DSPR2 SEM1 Week 3 Posting: Web Research Task

Use an Internet SEARCH ENGINE (or other Search Tool) to Find the Following:
• An Australian Professional Association relevant to the Graphic Design industry
• A useful website about Typography
• A useful website about Colour Theory

The search tool I used was Google http://www.google.com.au/

AGDA, which stands for Australian Graphic Design Association, is a professional association relevant to the Graphic Design industry.

A helpful website containing information about typography is: http://www.webstyleguide.com/type/index.html

This website contains a detailed guide on website design, covered under the main headings of

    • process
    • interface design
    • site design
    • page design
    • typography
    • editorial style
    • graphics and
    • multimedia

The typography section gives a general description of typography and then goes into some detail about the utilisation of type on the web. To quote from the summary:

“Good typography establishes a visual hierarchy for rendering prose on the page by providing visual punctuation and graphic accents that help readers understand relations between prose and pictures, headlines and subordinate blocks of text.”

http://www.mcpmedia.com/articles/paint-the-web.php

The above site contained a fair amount of useful information on colour theory and website design. It covers:

  • colour as a brand signal
  • colour as an emotional trigger
  • the colour wheel
  • HSV colour model

Some of my comic art

I'm unsure in what order these will eventually actually appear on the page, but we have here two drawings of my own character 'Daragon' which I did in '94, one of Dale Keown's Pitt (big dude in black armour) which I did in 2000, and a panel from a graphic novel I'm working on featuring a character called Lilith, from earlier this year. It's just a pity her legs are slightly too fat, for an idealised image that is, in my opinion.

I have a larger portfolio of work, and with higher resolution images, over at Deviant Art

My Dalek Illustration

This'll be a short post, and it's just to put up an Illustrator piccy I did last year of a dalek, which was the first time I put Illustrator to use for my own enjoyment. I'm a Doctor Who fan, after all. For those who aren't familar with daleks, click here

DSPR2 SEM1 HS1: Web Research Task

This research task is about Workplace Health and Safety in Queensland. The source for this information is the Queensland Government’s Workplace Health and Safety Website - http://www.dir.qld.gov.au/workplace

· Find out the name of the Act that relates to Workplace Health and Safety in Queensland

the Workplace Health and Safety Act

· Find the link that gives you the full PDF version of the Act

· Briefly describe (in your own words) the purpose of the Act

To ensure that practices adopted within the workplace ensure to as great a degree as possible that unsafe practices and attitudes are eliminated, so as to reduce the cahnce of anyone sustaining an injury.

· Find out the name of the Regulation that relates to Workplace Health and Safety in Queensland

Most probably the WH&S regulation I've linked to below. The WHS Regulation 1997.

· Find the link that gives you the full PDF version of the Regulation

· Briefly describe (in your own words) the purpose of the Regulation

To ensure that practices adopted within the workplace ensure to as great a degree as possible that unsafe practices and attitudes are eliminated, so as to reduce the cahnce of anyone sustaining an injury.

· Briefly describe (in your own words) what is meant by Codes of Practice

(these were known as Advisory Standards until November 2004)?

A Code of Practice is a regulatory framework which establishes minimum standards of employment which employers must adhere to.

· What is a Ministerial Notice and how does it impact on any existing Regulation?

Ministerial notices are urgent workplace warnings. They are issued when a
situation occurs that puts someone at imminent serious risk of harm at, or
near, a workplace.
A notice may set out methods of work or other things to prevent or minimise
exposure to the risk.
A notice overrides any existing regulation.

· Briefly describe your general obligations as an employee in relation to the Act and Regulations.

Generally to not act in any which will endanger, show disrespect to or unreasonably interfere with, any fellow employees or your employer, and to carry out lawful instructions given by one's employer.

TITLE: DSPR2 SEM1 Week 3 Posting: What is a Blog & How I Will Use My Blog

A blog is a website to which posts are added, which are then displayed in reverse chronological order - the most recent posts at the top of the page. Blog is a shortened form of web log. They use a conversational form of documentation and are comprised of text, hypertext, images and links to other pages.
Wikipedia's blog page - for more information; this was my source for the summary above..

I'm intending to use my blog as required for my studies short-term, but hope to promote some of my comic art and also books I'm keen on further down the line.

DSPR2 SEM1 Week 3 Posting: About Me

I'm Dave and I'm a Graphic Design student at Brisbane North TAFE. I once worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician for a private pathology firm, but didn't enjoy that at all. I've always wanted to draw comic books for a living, and have a strong interest in speculative fiction (sci-fi and fantasy) both in novels and film/TV. I read a great deal, draw regularly and spend too much time posting on various message boards 'round about the place. I'm doing this course so as to change careers, because working in the medical field is not for me. Ultimately I'd like to find work in Illustration, or Website Design, and am currently working on a Graphic Novel, although I've been treading that path for years now. I think I'd be happiest if I could eventually get some comic work published and/or gain professional work as an artist in comics.
